We love Edward. He’s everything we expect our men to be. Too bad they haven’t gotten the clue yet! However, we have an actor who plays our favorite guy in the movies. In our minds, has Edward become Rpattz and Rpattz Edward? Will we continue to support Rob after he ends the movie franchise and steps down from his role as Edward, or will we allow him to fade into the woodwork of other actors who made their name playing a certain role?
For example, perhaps one of the sexiest actors to play a tormented male vampire on the big screen is David Boreanez (Angel from the late ’90s TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel). That man was born to play Angel just like Rpattz was born. to play Edward. David now stars in a hit series, Bones, with fans new and old. Does Rob have enough acting talent to land the next gig and earn money for these studios?
His face is everywhere, that’s for sure, and you’d have to live under a rock not to at least recognize who he is. From Twilight party favors to posters and billboards, he’s everywhere. He is selling without even realizing that she is selling things. Only his Twilight movies have broken records at the box office. The girls chase him down the street and even almost run him over once. But the question again is the girls who call out “Rob” or “Edward”.
With the imminent release of Remember Me, you’re up for a challenge. Will his fans root for him in a different character, or will he be typecast into Edward-esque characters to please his fans and earn that income? From the trailer for the movie (which looks soooo good!) it sounds like she’s going to be playing another Twilight-esque character.
Rob has acting talent and should use Twilight to launch his career and do whatever he wants with it. Like Daniel Radcliffe, he’s been successful on Broadway.
But let’s be real. Rob was made to play that kind of character. The tortured soul, so to speak. He has the potential to outplay Edward, but his fans will want to see him that way. Would we have wanted to see Clint Eastwood (an old man who did a lot of westerns) in something other than a western? Would we want to see Adam Sandler do more than just a comedy? Would we want to see Johnny Depp play someone sane?
For Twihards, Rob is equal to Edward. End of story. Even if he plays other characters, we’ll keep in our heads that he’s Edward. As an actor, he allows us to project our love for a fictional character who lived in our minds long before the movies onto a physical being.
What Rob needs to do next is show his fanbase that he can continue to create great characters that we want to love. Remember Me promises a lot based on the trailer and a lot of people should go see it, even if he didn’t reprise his role as Edward.
For now, it will continue to appear on Twilight party favors and other merchandise. And we will continue to love him as Edward. But it would be even better to love Rob the actor.
