In July, Murata Manufacturing announced the mass production of its all-solid-state battery that will be able to power wearables and earphones. The new battery is remarkably small, with a capacity of 25mAh at 3.8v. However, the battery’s low capacity is not suitable for use in electric vehicles. Lithium-ion cells in an electric vehicle typically provide 2,000 to 5,000 mAh at the same voltage. Similarly, a Murata cell would need to produce 100 times as much power as a Lithium-ion cell in an electric vehicle.

The battery’s small size is one reason why it is ideal for EVs and hybrid cars. Despite their small size, solid-state batteries can hold a significant amount of charge. Toyota is already using solid-state batteries in its HEVs, and Volkswagen is also planning to use them in their EVs starting in 2021. The company has partnered with several smaller technology companies that specialize in this technology, and is now planning to mass-produce the batteries.
