The Irish Water Spaniel is good with other pets if he is introduced correctly. The breed should be well socialized as puppies to avoid excessive shyness around strangers. He is a good family dog and gets along well with children. He must understand the leadership role, which is required for this breed.
The Irish Water Spaniel dog will love to work hard, whether it’s hunting or in the obedience ring. This breed is an excellent swimmer and has great stamina. This is not a dog for the meek or timid owner, as the dog will become stubborn, timid or overprotective, without the correct leadership.
Health issues: Irish Water Spaniels can have hip dysplasia, ocular entropion, ear infections, and hypothyroidism. It is very important to make sure your puppy or dog is up to date on all vaccinations, deworming, and heart preventatives. It is also suggested that you give your dog a complete check-up at least twice a year to make sure there are no hidden health issues that need attention.
Grooming: The coat of Irish Water Spaniels will need to be clipped regularly. This coat tangles easily and will need brushing at least once a week.
Living Conditions – An Irish Water Spaniel will need a lot of mental and physical exercise. This dog does best in the field and requires at least a medium to large garden. This dog is not suitable for apartment living.
