The Hawkeye Poster
The most famous of American movies, “Hawkeye” tells the story of a young American – Private John Gustafson who belongs to the Omaha Company. His family is well known in the area and he grew up there. He is sent to Europe to be trained by the German SS troops, whom he loathes. However, things go awry when his superiors discover that he is a homosexual and he is thrown into the camp concentration camp.
The movie takes place in the early days of World War II. The United States has been on the defensive all along and has not yet entered the war. The Japanese have not yet launched their first strike on the United States and the Americans are still suspicious of each other. John Gustafson proves himself to be a good fighter and even though he has been assigned to a female with a bad past, he manages to convince her that she wants to leave the army. They escape and she becomes his lover.
He later catches the leader of the German SS unit which she had been forced to join and kills him. Shortly thereafter he gets promoted and is given a tank and leads a group of his own men into action against the Japanese. He is successful and even joins the Americans. But after the war he is ordered to go back to Omaha Beach where his unit is supposed to be stationed.
A Movie I Highly Recommended
On their return he discovers that the beaches are being bombarded by the Japanese and they fire several shells at the Americans. Several of them are wounded. Two Americans are killed. John returns to Omaha Beach and helps to carry out some of their missions and later at the end of the movie is shot and killed. Later he realizes that the Americans had been told to surrender, but had chosen to fight anyway.
The plot of the movie is about a hero trying to find his place in this world. He has to fight and kill the enemy and also has to help other people like prisoners of war. He is depicted as a very good and idealistic American. Some of his fellow countrymen join in the war effort and also are killed. Eventually his unit is completely destroyed.
An interesting thing to note about this movie is that it is one of the few films in history to receive three Academy Awards for Best Picture. This makes it a definite must see movie for any fan of the genre. The late George C. Scott plays the role of Hawkeye and Robert Duvall provides the film’s score. Duvall is best known for his roles in the films The Bodyguard, Top Gun and Face Off. I have always liked Robert Duvall and his films never failed to impress me. So if you have not seen The Hawkeye Poster, then do yourself a favor and go out and watch it right away.
