Use Plumbers Tape

Plumbers tape, also referred to as thread seal tape or pipe thread tape, is used to create watertight joints on threaded fittings. It is used by plumbers, electricians and other workers who install home fixtures such as taps and shower heads, and can be purchased from plumbing supply stores or hardware shops for around R10 a roll.

Whether you’re installing new fittings or fixing existing ones plumbers, you need to make sure they’re watertight. This can be difficult, especially if you’re working with metal or plastic pipes, but with a little help from PTFE tape, you can create a watertight connection that’s safe to use and won’t leak.

To begin, remove any dirt or buildup from the pipe you’re connecting it to. You may need to wipe off the threads, too. This will give you a clearer idea of what direction to wrap the tape. Start at the second thread from the end of the pipe and hold it flat over the threads, extending it perpendicularly to the length of the pipe. Maintain tension on the tape so that it is snugly wrapped around the pipe in the correct direction. Work your way to the opposite end of the threads and continue wrapping until it covers them completely.

When to Use Plumbers Tape

If you’re using this tape to attach a shower head, it’s important to remember which direction you’re screwing it onto the pipe. You should be able to see the direction you’re screwing the object into the pipe, so take note of this and make sure that it matches up with the direction you’re wrapping the tape.

There are a few different types of plumbers tape on the market, all of which have specific uses. White tape is most common, although pink tape is sometimes preferred by professional plumbers due to its higher density and better resistance to tearing. All types of plumbing tape are made from a synthetic chemical compound called polytetrafluoroethylene, or PTFE. The chemical is similar to the substance that makes up nonstick pans, and it’s known for its lubrication properties.

It can withstand a wide range of temperatures and chemicals, including fluorine. It’s also safe to use in high-humidity environments and it’s extremely resistant to rusting. There are many situations where you’ll need to use a PTFE tape, but there are certain situations that aren’t suitable for it. For example, it’s not a good idea to use it on hose threads because it can create an overly tight seal and damage the hose. If you need to make a seal on a hose, use pipe dope instead of PTFE tape.

If you’re unsure which type of tape to use, you can find instructions on the box that comes with your product. You can also ask your local plumbing supply shop to help you out. They will be able to suggest which tape is best for your particular needs.
