Zanzibar is now one of the top tourist destinations in the Indian Ocean islands, Zanzibar’s enduring mystique has drawn travelers from all over the world for centuries. Since its beginnings as a Swahili port, Zanzibar has done a thriving business in day cargo.

In generations past, ivory, slaves, and spices were transported in large wooden sailing dhows across the Indian Ocean to the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. Although spices remain one of the main exports, these days the main attraction of Zanzibar is the beauty of the island itself.

Zanzibar’s history dates back to when the first dhows from Arabia and India discovered its natural harbour. Using the island as a staging point for caravans heading deep into the African interior, permanent settlements soon created the beginnings of what became Stone Town.

Traders from Oman, Gujarat and around the Indian Ocean moved their families across the ocean to start a life in Zanzibar, some amassing great fortunes and building the tall stone houses so iconic to Stone Town today.

Although the Swahili civilization in the Kilwa Kisiwani area further south reached its peak in the 14th century, Zanzibar’s prosperity came much later, with the arrival of the Omani sultans in the 18th century. Living and ruling from Stone Town, the sultans presided over the slave and ivory trade, planting vast spice plantations that survive to this day.
