There are about 1.2 billion Catholics in the world. With so many people with something in common, there is a great opportunity not only to build a great business but also one that is socially good and virtuous.

Now, in reality, a Catholic company should be no different from any other company apart from its objectives. When devout Catholics want to start a business, you will often see them start a bookstore. That’s great, but often these little stores are dominated by larger online chains.

Here are some tips for starting a business that carries the conviction that comes with faith:

  1. The most important thing is to realize that everyone needs a solution for something, and if you can satisfy that need, you are improving their life.. Your business does not have to be overtly Catholic (that is, a Catholic bookstore or Catholic bakery), rather your mission statement and the soul of your business should be oriented towards holiness. That way you could start a web development, shine show, or online fishing shop and still carry the impact of your faith with you.
  2. You need to learn effective sales and marketing skills. I can’t tell you how many Catholic companies I’ve seen have horrible promotional campaigns, terrible websites, and still wonder why they can’t get customers. Just because your business is based on faith doesn’t mean you can ignore the fundamentals.
  3. Participate in social networks. There are many people who are willing to spread your business, especially if you have consistently hired them. Do not ignore the revolution that is taking place, and take a course on social networks if necessary.
  4. Find a mentor, even if you are not Catholic. You need someone to brainstorm with and make sure your ideas are realistic and actionable. A mentor will act as a guide and make sure you are successful.
  5. Join a group of experts and share ideas. The best way to learn something new is to learn it from someone else. There are meeting groups everywhere and for almost every industry, and you should take advantage of them. An added benefit is that you will network with other people who can become future clients.

The point of this article is that you should do everything that a secular business person should do. Just as being religious will not help you to be a better soccer player, if you intend to join the business game, you must learn the rules of the business. So get out there and start learning.
