The first thing you’ll need to do when you start playing Age of Conan is determine what race your character will be. Careers in Age of Conan determine which character classes you can choose from, so you’ll want to think about your character’s career carefully rather than just choosing one based on appearance.

Age of Conan currently only has three different races to choose from, so it won’t be too confusing. Each race is more or less based on a historical ethnic group. For example, the Aquilonian people are probably more like the Romans at the height of the Roman Empire and are known for their culture, prosperity, and large cities.

The Cimmerians, on the other hand, are based on the Celts with probably a dash of Norse influence and are essentially a barbarian race from the mountains and highlands. Conan himself is Cimmerian. And then the Stygians are desert people and snake worshipers and are somewhat based on the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians.

There are a few other races in the game as well, but they are currently NPC only, though they will eventually become playable in future Age of Conan expansions.

Each of the classes falls under a particular archetype, Rogue, Priest, Soldier or Wizard and it’s pretty obvious from the class titles which archetypes fall under. While each race has a selection of several class options to choose from, since they also have some natural advantages in certain classes, you may want to let that guide your selection.

The Cimmerians are particularly good at martial arts, such as swordsmanship; Stygians are naturally drawn to the dark and magical arts (and are the only character class that can be a wizard); and the Aquilonian fall somewhere in the middle of the other two races, making it an ideal race if you prefer to play characters with a balanced set of abilities.
