If you like picturesque views and history, you will definitely love Bamiyan, Afghanistan. This picturesque place is considered one of the places that tourists should never miss to see or visit when they are in the country, as it is the site of many ruined Buddha statues that were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. These statues have existed for centuries and stood the test of time, but could not withstand the ravages of the war between religions in the country.

To get to Bamiyan, you can go by road from Kabul. When you venture into this region, try to go unnoticed with the help of a scarf that covers your head, mouth and nose. As well as being inconspicuous, this also helps keep dust out of your nose and mouth, as these roads are often bumpy and very dusty. You will be able to reach Bamiyan via a shared 4WD minivan that seats between five and ten people. The trip to Bamiyan usually takes about 9 hours.

When you arrive in the city of Bamiyan, apart from the famous Ruined Buddhas, you will be able to see how badly the war has destroyed part of the city. You can see many weapons that were left behind, jeeps that have been destroyed, and buildings and houses that are now part of the ruins around these destroyed Buddhas. You can also visit the Shahr-e Gholghola which is a fort that can give you majestic views of the valley as it sits high above the city.

To experience the cuisine that the locals enjoy, you may want to try what is called pulao and naan. You can buy these rice, vegetable and lamb stews and local flatbreads from what are called chaikhanas and you can accompany these delicious local dishes with lots of green tea which is also sold by these same vendors.
