WHAT: “Vintage”. “Recycling.” “Lately worn out.” All of these terms are ways of describing second-hand clothing. Tough economic times and growing concern for the environment have encouraged people to buy used clothing or donate it. Second-hand clothing can be found at various thrift stores, consignment stores, garage sales, and on the Internet with auction websites such as eBay. Today, many used clothes that are in good condition are waiting in stores for someone to notice them. For the budget and environmentally conscious, shopping for secondhand clothes can be fun and challenging – you never know what surprises you’ll find! You may not find anything in your size that you like, but if you are lucky, you might find an item that is absolutely perfect for you, or better, a real treasure! In fact, a friend of mine bought what she thought was a cute coin purse at a garage sale for $15. Little did she know that it was a designer brand whose handbags usually cost several thousand dollars a piece and that the appraised value of her pre-owned treasure was close to a thousand dollars!

WHY: Second-hand clothing is cheaper, less likely to shrink, and eco-friendly. By buying second-hand clothes, you give used clothes a second life and keep them out of landfills. In this age of eco-friendly choices, buying secondhand is a great idea and can be especially beneficial for families on a budget. Some charities may run second-hand clothing stores and earn money from the sale of the clothing to help others. Buying second-hand clothes also gives you the opportunity to discover great clothes at a very low price, not to mention that there are different styles and sizes for everyone! You’ll be able to enjoy the thrill of the hunt, find unique items that no one else will have, and help reduce textile waste in landfills.

AS:

• Check out garage sales, thrift stores, and consignment stores for second-hand clothing and other everyday items. Garage sales are great for finding cheap used clothing, and you can haggle on the price.

• When looking at thrift stores, look for labels you know and trust. Prices may be a bit higher, especially if the garment has been well cared for, but the quality and reputation of the manufacturer guarantee a longer life.

• Sometimes luxury clothing for adults and children is donated to thrift stores. You can check the stores near the exclusive neighborhoods to get new donations.

• Be sure to thoroughly review all items. Make sure all seams are tight and secure, especially around the neckline, underarms, buttons, and zippers. Check for moth holes, loose stitching, and stretched necklines, armholes, and waistbands.

• Don’t waste time with lots and lots of clothes – it’s time consuming and can be frustrating. Choose stores that organize clothing well enough that you can quickly and easily find what you need.

• Bring clothing that is too worn, torn, or stained to sell or donate to recycling centers.

TIP: Be sure to wash all newly purchased secondhand clothing before wearing it. When buying toys, you should disinfect them before giving them to your children. Blankets, sheets, and towels should also be washed thoroughly.
