1. Martial arts work

It sounds obvious, but don’t neglect your martial arts work. While cardio and strength training routines will start to take up more of your time, you shouldn’t let your martial arts suffer. Also, don’t forget to focus on the areas where you are weakest. This could be submissions, takedowns, or vertical brawls, depending on your martial arts background.

2. Strength work

Don’t forget your strength training. A training program designed for martial arts or MMA will help you build the strength you need. Working on the core parts of the body, such as the arms, legs, shoulders, back, and chest, will help you get stronger and make your kicks, punches, and submission holds more effective.

3. Cardio work

Being able to go the distance and be as strong in the last minute as you were in the first depends on fitness and conditioning. Cardio training, such as biking, running, and rowing, are great ways to increase endurance. If you already do your strength work at the gym, why not do your cardio there too and vary your training? Or maybe you prefer to run or bike outdoors instead of on a treadmill or stationary bike.

4. Diet

What you eat plays a vital role in your training routine. You should also make sure you get your 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day to get the essential vitamins and nutrients you need.

5. Days of rest and sleep

Never underestimate the power of rest days. Your body will go through many changes as you bulk up and become fitter, and you’ll need time to repair damaged muscles and rest between grueling training sessions. Don’t be afraid to take a couple of days off a week, and if you’re feeling down or not in the right frame of mind, take a day off. You will most likely come back rarer to go.

Sleep is vital along with rest, so your body has a chance to repair and revitalize itself. Sleep experts estimate that most people need at least 7 hours of sleep a night, and some will need even more. There is nothing wrong with going to bed early. If you train a lot in the morning, then you will wake up earlier and have to go to bed earlier.
